The 5 Most Overpowered True Rune Powers in Suikoden6 min read

Which True Rune is the most overpowered True Rune in the Suikoden series?

The question is harder to answer than at first sight.

Judging purely on raw damage, there is no competition with the True Lightning Rune.

The Hammer of Raijin in Suikoden III does around 1,800 damage.

There’s more to a strong True Rune, like instant death factors, healing capablities.

But most of all around compatibility with its bearer.

We focus in this article on battle performance and synergy with the Star of Destiny.

The Rune of Beginning is hereby considered in its two parts; The Bright Shield Rune and the Black Sword Rune.

This because they have different forms for players to actually use in battle. Technically it’s incomplete without it’s other half.

Let’s dive into the top 5!

Too long to read? Watch it in video form now above!

#5 - Black Sword Rune

Jowy Atreides’ Black Sword rune is ranked #5 because it is one of the most offensively focused rune powers in Suikoden II.

Its spell progression is particularly aggressive.

Flash Judgment deals roughly 100 damage,
while Twinkling Blade attacks all enemies for around 100 and carries a 30% instant death chance.

The Piercing One provides a powerful
single target attack, while Hungry Friend reaches approximately 1200 damage against all enemies.

The most important part is that Jowy is naturally suited to the rune.

His magic and dexterity skills areparticularly strong and modern guides describe his unique rune as one of the reasons he is such an effective character.

The weakness is versatility.

Black Sword is overwhelmingly focused on killing its enemies.

It doesn’t provide the defensive and healing tools that make some other rune combinations so difficult to deal with.

Still, if the question is simply which rune power makes enemies disappear, Black Sword deserves a place in the top five.

The rune suits the character narrative and the overall story arc of Suikoden II.

In the end phase of the game, Jowy still tries to attack his former best friend.

Riou chooses another path and doesn’t instigate any attacks. He only is on the moral defensive side of it all.

But that’s what places Jowy in 5 and that makes Riou #4.

#4 - Bright Shield Rune

If the black sword represents destruction, the bright shield represents the other half of the equation, keeping everyone alive.

It begins relatively modestly with Great Blessing restoring around 70 HP to the party

and Shining Light dealing 130 damage to all enemies.

Battle Oath then provides 300 HP of party healing and can inflict Berserk.

Finally, Forgiver’s Sign can restore 2,000 HP to the party total with the excess healing converted into damage against one enemy when his conditions are fulfilled.

This becomes especially powerful because Riou is already one of Suikoden 2’s most flexible characters.

He can function effectively as either a physical attacker or a magic user,

meaning that the Bright Shield doesn’t turn him into a dedicated healer who contributes little else.

Fans have repeatedly highlighted this aspect of the Bright Shield, and in community discussions,

players describe it as one of the reasons Suikoden II can become exceptionally easy,

with some outright calling it one of the game’s most overpowered rune options.

It isn’t the strongest offensive rune here, but it may be one of the most effective at making an entire party harder to kill.

#3 - True Rune of Lightning

If this ranking were based exclusively on raw magical damage, True Lightning would have the most  excellent argument for number one.

In Suikoden III, the Rune’s spells include Soaring Bolt at 900 damage, Furious Blow at 1,000, Thunder Storm at 1,100 to all enemies, and Hammer of Raijin at a staggering 1,800 damage against one target.

That 1,800 figure is the key statistic into this ranking.

True Lightning combines enormous single-target damage with several powerful multi-target attacks, giving it a remarkably strong offensive progression.

Geddoe is the ideal bearer. He is already a capable physical fighter with good magical compatibility, allowing him to exploit the Rune without becoming completely dependent on it.

Working alongside the Flame Champion has given him tremendous amounts of skill.

Gameplay-focused Suikoden players have repeatedly placed True Lightning and Soul Eater among the strongest True Rune options.

The only reason the True Lightning Runedoesn’t take first place, is that raw damage doesn’t account for everything.

Other Runes gives its bearer something even more difficult to quantify: instant death for their enemies.

#2 - Rune of Punishment

The Rune of Punishment is the great contradiction of this list.

The normal Suikoden IV battle numbers aren’t particularly impressive. Especially compared to the best offensive True Runes.

Eternal Ordeal deals 300 damage while hurting the caster, Double-Edged Sword deals 150 damage to all enemies with recoil.

Voice of Death offers instant death with a risk to the caster, and Everlasting Mercy deals 500 damage to all enemies while healing allies for 500 HP.

On a spreadsheet, that shouldn’t put it above True Lightning or even the Black Sword Rune.

But the Rune becomes far more interesting when Lazlo is taken into account.

The Rune’s Atonement phase consumes the life force of its bearer, making it one of the most dangerous True Runes to wield. Lazlo is exceptional because he can eventually bring it into its Forgiveness Phase, allowing him to use its power without suffering the normal fatal consequences.

This is where the Rune’s lore and gameplay diverge dramatically. Fans have long pointed out that the destructive power displayed by Punishment in the story is considerably more frightening than its ordinary battle spell numbers.

That makes the Rune of Punishment more difficult to rank.

For pure gameplay efficiency, it definitely belongs below Soul Eater and True Lightning.

But when we ask how powerful the Rune becomes when paired with its most successful bearer,

Lazlo’s Forgiveness Phase changes the equation.

That’s why it earns number two.

#1 - Soul Eater Rune

The Soul Eater is arguably the best example of a True Rune whose battle kit is simply absurd.

In Suikoden II, Finger of Death provides instant death against a single eligible enemy. Black Shadow deals 500 damage to all enemies. Hell provides instant death against all eligible enemies. Judgment then supplies approximately 1,500 damage against a single target.

Notice what makes that combination so powerful.

There is no single situation it can’t address.

Large group of weak enemies? Use Hell.

Dangerous single enemy? Use Finger of Death.

Instant death isn’t appropriate? Use Judgment against one enemy.

Need to damage an entire group? Use Black Shadow.

And then you add Tir McDohl.

Tir is already a highly capable hybrid character, with strong physical and magical statistics. He can function as either a fighter or mage while still having room for additional Rune customisation alongside Soul Eater.

That’s the difference between a powerful Rune and an overpowered combination.

The Soul Eater doesn’t just have a huge maximum damage number. It gives a skilled Star of Destiny an answer to almost every normal battle situation.

Yes, True Lightning hits harder.

Bright Shield does provide superior defensive options.

The Rune of Punishment arguably has a higher destructive capability in the story.

But Soul Eater combines damage, AoE, instant death, flexibility and an exceptional bearer better than any of them.

That’s why it takes the number one position in the ranking.
