Trucking Diary: Rotterdam to Plymouth with Chocolate!4 min read

Welcome back to a new trucking diary with new adventures!

The move to Rotterdam has been completed. I’ve signed my new contract and I must say I’m very happy with that. It’s one step closer to achieving the dream of my own trucking company.

Rotterdam also provides more new routes to drive. I’m all in for exploring more of the world. New scenic routes to drive through. New stations to stop for fuel and food. Maybe learn some new truckers along the way. With the help of social media these days, they don’t get lost in space and time.

I hope to meet some new truckers. Some that are a bit nerdy, just like me. Who would love to play video games in their spare time. Those that listen to all kinds of music. From classical to heavy metal.

I’m an all-round lover of all kinds of everything. That’s what I also hope to do once I get my own trucking company. I hope to have a vastly diverse set of drivers under me. Who come from all walks of life. All kinds of origins. If you open yourself up, somebody else will do the same for you.

Then I get taken out of my daydream by my manager. Yes, it’s still the one from Cologne. He tells me that we have some urgent delivery heading to Plymouth in the UK.

The urgency is so high that he tells me that if I get a fine, it will be covered by the company. Let’s hope that doesn’t happen, of course, but hey.

Later on they get a couple of speeding offences and a red light offence. Guess what? It all got covered. No blame on me whatsoever.

The amount of chocolate in my trailer is more than enough to cover all of that. Prices have absolutely skyrocketed. Climate change becomes real when my chocolate is being affected. And I eat a lot of chocolate. Though exercise helps to balance that. Sort of.

There’s one thing I shouldn’t forget for certain. My passport. In the EU I can go with my ID card, but not there. One of the disadvantages of the Brexit. Though not to despair, we’re going there right now.

I had sailed through Belgium and then made my way to Calais. Because of course I have to use the tunnel there. We arrive in Folkestone some hours later. While trying to pass another truck, I see the camera flashing. That was my first offence in the UK, noted.

It’s weird to pass trucks and cars on the right lane of the motorway. The motorway is the same in every single country. With two or three lanes, it’s always a dull moment on them. Just passing by time and in this case miles. The countryside roads of the UK are fun though. On narrow, sharp and bendy roads, they expect you to do 100 kilometres an hour. In some place I’m hardly doing 25. More than that will result in a life ending crash.

Also, one more thing about the motorways in the UK. I don’t know which country has more roadworks. Is it Belgium, Germany or the UK?

Can’t really figure that one out. The stretching to Plymouth has been long, but worth going fast.

As I’m in Plymouth I almost forget to use the left lane. Can’t blame that on the mainland European. I’m very tired as well. I’m lucky I’m there. The tachograph also tells me that I should have taken a stop soon. I get it delivered just in time.

The company that I cannot name for reasons, is very happy with this delivery. Delivering this on time with a lot of fines was worth it.

A happy customer means new clientele for my boss. In a transport sector, there is already so much competition. Best get the word out there on company title. But they also get to know me. Those connections might prove useful in the future. These companies will remember me as the driver that defies the time and space. The one driver that’s actually on time. Even despite possible setbacks.

After having unloaded the cargo, I find a truck stop nearby. I have a day off now in the UK. Not sure what to do since I’m having this truck and trailer with me. So I’m gonna explore Plymouth into its depths. Then we’ll wait and see what the next drive will hold.

Could go and send me to Scotland or Wales. Maybe even Northen Ireland or Ireland. Wait and see what planning comes up with for me. As long as I’m making money, that’s what matters to me. The more the better. All for my 1 dream.

I’ll catch you in a new trucking diary!
