Suikoden: The Anime | Episode 2 | Review1 min read

Welcome back to another Suikoden: The Anime review!

In this second episode, we return to the mercenary fortress and follow the events leading up to one of the most iconic and brutal moments in Suikoden II.

As a long-time fan of the series, I’m particularly interested in how the anime adapts the original game’s story. This episode already makes some significant changes to the order of events, introduces new details surrounding the Dragon Fire Spears, and gives us another look at the ruthless nature of Luca Blight.

But how well do these changes work? Does the anime manage to capture the horror and emotional weight of the original game, and which details have been added, changed or left out along the way?

In this review, I’ll take a closer look at the differences between the anime and the game, from the mercenary fortress and the burning village of Toto to Pilika’s heartbreaking encounter with Luca Blight. I’ll also discuss the character portrayals, the animation, the music and the decisions made to keep the story moving at a steady pace.

There are some welcome additions, a few unfortunate omissions, and some familiar moments that fans of Suikoden II will recognise immediately.

So, what works, what could have been better, and how does Episode 2 hold up overall?

Let’s dive in and find out!

Warning: This review contains spoilers for Episode 2 and Suikoden II.
