CHAPTER 10: THE ARRIVAL IN SCHENKEN!7 min read

The carriage rode for many more hours, before arriving in the new capital of Altgrön.
A big sign on the right hand side of the main road reads:

“Hier in Schenken verdient Mann alles doch mal selber!” That roughly translates as: “In the city of Schenken, you have to earn it yourself!”.

The new slogan was instructed by Zayden’s mother when she made it the new capital. Many taxes for the region were raised rapidly in the last year.

The people of the city are suffering under the high taxes. Once it was the wealthy capital of the local region. Now that it serves as capital of the country, its headed for demise. The main streets once blooming with shops and beautiful flowers along its’ way, it now has many signs reading: “Closed for business permanently.”

Zayden notices this first hand as the carriage rides through the biggest street of all, the “Hauptstrasse” (Main Street). Shopkeepers and citizens see the carriage and make their way to it. They walk along the carriage and a man yells: “Sir Zayden! Please help us! Your mother is ruining our city and the country.” Another woman is even louder: “You don’t belong here at all! That witch from the east should be fired, and then shamed in public. Our country is becoming poor, filthy and riddled with crimes by the government. She should be stopped before war breaks out!”

Marques tries to calm Zayden, as he sees that Zayden becomes uncomfortable from all the people shouting at him.

“Zayden, don’t mind them at all. There’s nothing you can do about their feelings or what’s going on in the world around them.”

Zayden looks towards Marques, sighs, and says: “There is something I can do. These people clearly suffer from the policies that my parents and the government have made. War is most definitely not the right way to right your wrongs. Nor is it the best way to get vengeance on the part of the country that ignored you for decades. She should be the leader of all people, west and east. If the people call her a witch, then there’s a valid feeling to call her that. I’ll see if I can convince them to change policies, stop the anticipation of war, and make my mark felt in the nation.”

The carriage rides on towards the entry of a big building. It used to serve as the seat of government. Now, it only serves as the residency of Zayden’s parents. A Forever Green Guard steps up to the carriage and opens it. Marques steps out, checks the surroundings and waves at Zayden. He steps out and follows Marques inside.

As the duo steps inside, they look up to a massive staircase in the centre of their visible range.

“Woah Zayden, this is massive. I’ve never been here before actually. I’ve only met your parents at the negotiation table in a side building. Do you reckon there are many people at work here?”

Before Zayden can answer, a servant greets them: “Greetings Sir Zayden… and guard I presume? How utmost unfortunate of timing to arrive here now in the grand capital of Altgrön, Schenken! Her Excellency has urged me to show you to a room for the day. She is currently unavailable due to highly important meetings. As they are classified, I am not able to inform you on the matters spoken of. Your guard will reside in your room as well. We have ensured privacy for the both of you, not to worry.”

The servant walks with Zayden and Marques upstairs and takes a right turn. Walking down the hallway, Marques whispers to Zayden: “Such utterly posh use of vocabulary is used inside this residency, sir Zayden. I hope I do not insult you with my presence in the same room, let alone share the space with his Excellency?”

Zayden knows he should not laugh, but he can’t keep the poker face. He smiles a bit and snickers, but doesn’t respond.

The servant hears the whispering behind him but doesn’t hear the content. “I beg your pardon sirs, but is something amiss? If so, I am of all kinds of assistance to you. To make your stay as comfortable as you desire.”

Zayden shakes his head: “No kind sir, everything is pleasant at the moment, at ease. My gratitude for showing us the way to our corridors. We can see ourselves through from here on out. Thank you for the wonderful assistance thus far, and have a pleasant day.”

Marques and Zayden walk on through the door of their room, go inside and wait till the servant is gone. They then lock the door from the inside. Without saying a word, they check the entirety of the room to ensure they are alone. Within a matter of minutes, the pair finds a set of hidden microphones and camera’s. Dismantling them would certainly trigger alarms. Instead of dismantling, they figure out a way to communicate. As kids, Zayden and Marques had their own sign language. It would prevent them from getting into trouble at times. It also gave them advantage in playing games with other kids, or outsmarting teachers with questions.

Because of the lack of possible things to do, the pair decides to lounge on their large beds and bide their time. They sign to each other to just keep their ears and eyes open. Beyond that, they should only communicate on daily events, to avoid any form of suspicion.

“Sir Zayden, may I ask something freely? How do you feel about being back in Altgrön?”

Zayden acts well accordingly. “That is an interesting question, guard. I am thrilled to be back here in Altgrön. It’s my home and it’s where my family is. Without them, I wouldn’t be the man I am today. The experience in Netralia was unique, but tiresome and difficult at times. Mostly because I miss the people I hold most dear, my mother and father. I often wondered how they would fare. My only hope is that they can be proud of my achievements so far. And that they see a role in government or as their successor in the future.”

“Understood sir. I’m very appreciative of your open answer and kind nature. Everyone should follow your example like that.”

Marques nods and Zayden nods back. They know that this answer is sufficient enough to satisfy the narcissistic traits of Zayden’s mother.

Having learned that there is no option to speak with his parents today, Zayden suggests that they turn in for the day. The situation apparently is dire enough that these meetings take priority over Zayden’s mother seeing her own son. This actually does not come as a surprise. She has always spent time away from her son. Zayden was mostly raised by caretakers and servants. The only form of communication was through formal letters. He did not have autonomy or a form of choice during his upbringing. Very opposing to what he’s learned the last year in Netralia alongside Jowlani and Laura.

Will Zayden be able to have a meaningful conversation with his parents? Or will he feel like he’s been an afterthought like his entire youth? Whichever the outcome, Zayden has prepared himself for the worst possible outcome. With that in mind, Marques and Zayden turn in for the day, tired from their long trip.

Zayden hopes that he can get some answers to questions he’s been holding inside for many years. At least from his father, who’s more open. Especially when mother is not around. The Iron Mother will most likely not descend from her throne, not even with a lot of icebreakers. Thus, Zayden has to tap into The Benevolent Father. The one who always is willing to give people second chances. The one to rarely, but sometimes persuade the leader of the nation, to change her mind.

Can the benevolent father turn the iron mother into something more flexible?

Will Zayden be able to fully display the events that happened in his last year in Netralia?
