CHAPTER 17: THE ENEMY FROM WITHIN?5 min read

With a new wave of enemies nearing the border fast, it may be wise to switch strategies.
Professor Rania and general Grafmann have constructed such a strategy and explain them to their units. The magicians are sent out first again, to do maximum damage against the other magical unit at range.

Grafmann’s units stay behind the border gate, out of sight to aid them when the enemy gets close. A lure to draw them into own territory.

A scout reports that the enemy is now in range of the magician’s units, and thus Jowlani makes his way out, with Laura and Rania. Zayden stays with Grafmann as instructed.

On the plains of the now incinerated grounds, Rania puts her units into formation.

“The time has come once again to stand for your country. Give it all you got, and don’t be afraid of what could await us all. Your efforts and investment will not be in vain. Time to cast!”

The second magical unit of Altgrön is in range, though Trudi Heinecke is nowhere to be seen. Did the fire blast from last time injure her? Rania, Jowlani and Laura gaze again. They appear to hold a white flag and are waving it. A scout by horse comes closer. In this game of chess, Rania decided that she should have a set of archers with her. They keep the scout under possible fire.

The scout dismounts the horse at a reasonable distance and shouts:

“Frau Rania, ein Botschaft von Trudi Heinecke! You have injured me gravely with your spell. I have instructed this scout to relay the following message. We will not seek anymore hostilities for now. Let us take this time to re-evaluate all intentions. I will have an audience with our leaders on matters of truce and lasting peace. Gruß von deiner Trudi.”

As Rania is listening, Laura and Jowlani keep their attention on what’s going on behind the scout in the horizon. Nothing seems out of order. Though suddenly…

“MAN DOWN! MAN DOWN!” A student has been shot by one of the archers and collapses on the spot. This blows all students in chaos, not knowing what to do. The leading trio turns around, to then hear: “UGH! ARGH!”

The scout has been shot by one of the other archers. Without hesitation, Rania magically strikes down all archers with lightning magic, to calm the remaining students down. She checks the remnants of the archers and finds a written note: “Strike down one of our own and make it look like an ambush. Then fall back and let our comrades fall with grace.”

As Rania finishes reading it aloud, the border gates shut down. In the vicinity just before it closes, Rania sees that it’s due to general Grafmann’s orders that the gates are being closed. The magician’s units trapped, Altgrön’s magical unit advances and uses all elements of magic against them.

The barren plains are put aflame again, thunderclouds brewing and striking lightning to the ground. Many students collapse and pass on the spot.

Rania urges students to fall back as close as possible to the border gate. With her own back against the gate wall, Rania casts a spell as she moans and groans of pain, having been inflicted by magical damage as well.

A massive bubble surrounds the students that managed to get to the border wall, both alive and deceased. The light around the students eyes turns bright white and suddenly.. they appear on the other side of the border gate, in safety.

“What the hell just happened? Jowlani? Rania? Others? Are we okay!?”
Jowlani and the other students nod and yell that they’re okay towards Laura.

Rania though seems to have used just too much of her powers. She falls down. A medical magical student tries to use spells to heal her wounds. But they appear to be too grave. Rania barely can move any body part, but with a final physical flow of energy, she waves towards Laura and Jowlani.

In the meantime, Zayden has departed his unit after hearing and witnessing events from this side of the gate. He joins the pair, awaiting the news.

“Eughh, my time has finally come. I knew it. You can never trust old friends when you’ve not seen them for too long. My students, you have become so powerful. After many centuries my physical form will come to rest eternally. I want you to go to the city of Zomerhoven, just thirty minutes to the west from here. Mister van den Beerenstra will be there, awaiting the events happened here. Tell him what Grafmann did, that son of a bitch. And when you see his face again, smile as you kill him and tell him I will wait for him in hell.”

Rania closes her eyes, and her body becomes bright, shining light. She sort of evaporates into thin air, as small blue and green particles rise up into the air. A bracelet appears from it and floats towards the trio and echoes: “Open up your hands, the bracelet will find its’ way towards the person needing it most.”

The bracelet floats towards the hands of Laura and puts itself around her right wrist. “In the face of imminent death on your destiny, you will fall and rise once more.”

A student from Zayden’s unit comes running and informs him that all Altgrön troops have withdrawn outside of visible range for now. General Grafmann is nowhere to be found however. Zayden instructs them to lie in wait near the gate, just in case, alongside the remnants of the Magician’s Faction.

Zayden, Jowlani and Laura will now venture out towards Zomerhoven, to instruct former prime minster van den Beerenstra what happened on the battlefield today.

What were general Grafmann’s intentions really with this stunt?

Why did he disappear into thin air?

What does the passing of professor Rania do for the morale of the Magician’s Faction and all the remaining students trying to fight for Faucon-Bas and Netralia?
