The night sky is full of stars and our heroes are escaping the battlegrounds of Faucon-Bas and its border.
Still confused by the ending of events and general Grafmann’s actions, Jowlani needs a quick talk with Zayden about it.
“Zay, what the actual you know what, happened there? We were sent out for death. Did you know anything about this at all?”
Zayden looks just as confused about the events as Jowlani’s question. He shrugs his shoulders, looks a bit sad and answers the question.
“I had no clue he would do such a thing at all. I was only told our units had to provide backup in case more enemies would appear besides Altgrön’s magical unit. Had I known that this was his plan all along, I would have sent in my unit earlier. We would have faced the same fate. Professor Rania for sure will search for him and put him to the stand for it. It’s an act of treason for sure.”
Jowlani looks more calm with this explanation from his other half. He now knows that he wasn’t betrayed by him, as a slight lack of trust still remains from recent history.
In the chaotic nature of yesterday’s events, Adnap and Serena scrambled leftover equipment and goods into carts, for horses to carry them along the escape route. Luckily nothing funny occurred, as it easily could have been an ambush route.
“Zomerhoven it is then? I’ve never been there actually. I mostly ventured to the north to sell my wares. Does it have lovely weather there?”
Serena looks towards Adnap and laughs, just as Laura does.
“How long do you think this trip will take? Five days? It is a mere 30 minutes away to the west, 20 minutes if we walk fast and the horses can bear it. We mustered so much together when everything fell apart. Let’s hope they’re able to help us and provide us with lodgings. My friend Casper should be able to. He owns an inn and tavern there.”
“Oh dear Adnap, always with such jokes. But when we reach Zomerhoven, I’m not sure what we can do. We’ve lost all contact with our fellow scouts and students along the way. I don’t even want to know how things are over in Faucon-Bas.”
Gates Closed in Zomerhoven
The trip continues smoothly and when dawn arrives, so does the companionship in Zomerhoven. They arrive at a large gate, closed with guards in front of it.
“Halt there. Where are you from and do you have your travel documents?”
Most of them look towards each other. They have no travel documents as everything was left behind. Luckily, Adnap still does.
“There you go sir. My travel documents and merchant papers. All in order, you will find. We come from Faucon-Bas. My friends and I fought against the Altgrönian army and got scrambled in the heat of events. We managed to find each other again. Can you instruct Nelson to see me directly? We have worked together for many years.”
One of the guards enters inside the gate as the other checks out all the papers. A good ten minutes pass by and the guard returns. They whisper and discuss something and then turn back to our friends.
“Papers are all in order. Lord Sage Nelson will be with you as soon as possible. Please turn to the Inn of Courage, hosted by Karthemi. They will help you further in your quest. We will keep our eyes out for any of your friends. Should the enemy come closer, we look forward to working together with all of you.”
Once inside the city, they look up towards a huge square venturing out into various corners. Every building, whether house or commerce, seems to have been recently renovated. Zomerhoven is well known for its ever-growing economy, due to its established trade routes with the nations to the south.
Seen as the centre of a new innovation called ‘banking’, merchants can now store their money or send it to other ‘accounts’. At the Bank, everything is kept safe in vaults, only accessible by the account owner, or highly ranked bank officials. Adnap proposes to go there first to withdraw some money from his account.
World's First Bank of Zomerhoven
Inside the bank they are met by a fascinating tiny creature. With blue skin and a costume worthy of stature, it greets them.
“Good morning kind gentlemen, ladies and others. Welcome to the Zomerhoven Bank, the first in all the world. How can I be of service?”
“No need for courtesy Pedro, it’s just me. Good old Adnap. We come from Faucon-Bas, you’ve heard of things going down there. I need some money to get us started here. That way we can gather more allies and fight against these bastards. No disrespect there sir Zayden. I want to help out in every way I can.”
“How much does sir Adnap wish to withdraw? Your account currently holds….”
The creature whispers the amount into Adnap’s ears. He looks shocked by it.
“Oh dear me Pedro, that’s.. a lot actually. Take out half of it. Can you give this to me in something new called “bills”. I hear it’s being accepted almost by every other salesman and commercial venture these days.”
A nod emanates from the creature’s face. A quarter of an hour later, he returns with stacks of these so called ‘bills’. He gives them to Adnap and tells him he will write down the withdrawal.
No one else has seen this new form of currency before, even if the value has not changed at all. They all come close to Adnap to get a look at it.
“Adnap is a smart business man. I have kept myself low on living standards in cases of need like this. No worries, I will all help you out as promised. Just come to me when you need to buy something and we will sort it out. For now let’s get on over to the Inn of Courage, to your friend Karthemi was it, Serena?”
Inn of Courage and The Next Steps
They walk from the bank to the inn and then meet with Karthemi, Serena’s old friend. He talks about the good old days and their great friendship over the years, including his identity and name change.
Karthemi had some issues and therefore changed everything there was about him, becoming the person they are today.
They tell Serena that they can stay for as long as necessary, without any costs.
Another long day has gone by, full of travel and getting the funds to work further on building their own army.
Learning of the banking system might provide of use in the future, for sure.
What will the meeting with Lord Nelson provide to our team?
Will there be enough supplies in Zomerhoven to purchase?
Can trust between Jowlani and Zayden finally be restored fully?
