My Hopes For Suikoden Star Leap!6 min read

The upcoming Suikoden Star Leap centres mostly prior to the events of Suikoden I.
Details are slowly coming out by Konami, but much is still unknown about the game.

What are my hopes for Suikoden Star Leap, with the information we currently have?

Flik & Viktor - Their Common Story

We have witnessed that the hero of the game meets Odessa, Flik and Viktor.

However, we never see how Flik and Viktor actually met in the first place.

It’s a comradery that’s earned through trial and tribulation,
but has not been in place since they first encountered each other.

I would like to see how, where and when they met, and under which circumstances. I could imagine Viktor drinking heavily in a local tavern, rampaging the place.
In comes ‘Blue Lightning’ Flik stepping in to drag him out, as Viktor roaring like the bear (or lion as he proclaims…) he can be.

After that, they run into each other again. This time, Viktor being sober, and Flik recollecting that first encounter.

It turns out they’re sent out to the same job by different clients, and have to pair up to beat up some bandits.

That’s when they can see their common worth, individually and together.

Possibly, we learn more after this about Viktor. What exactly happened in North Window, when Neclord first struck his town.

Flik can speak on his trials after leaving the Warrior’s Village, and how he met Odessa. Their path to romance is still to be portrayed in a Suikoden game.

Viktor and Flik’s life together, throughout many nights at the tavern, tell their life stores of both these charming mercenaries. Scary in battle, tiny hearts with the right people.

‘Deathblow’ Georg Prime – The General That Left

Why did George ever leave the Six Generals of the Scarlet Moon Empire?

Very little is known about Georg and why he left the empire. We only see a glimpse of him in Suikoden V, talking about the travels from Scarlet Moon to the Queendom of Falena, coming into Falena by request of close friend Ferid.

There have been official publications that the Scarlet Moon Empire was fracturing internally. This could have been beneficial for Windy to try and seduce emperor Barbarossa, and stake her claim. Little did she know, that Barbarossa’s Sovereign Rune, meant that she couldn’t do anything. Though she did manage to keep the other generals in line with Black Runes.

Did George leave prior to those events? Did he know about the Black Runes, and wasn’t tricked by Windy? Or was the internal fracturing the reason he abandoned the empire?

Playing through these events in Star Leap would tell us more about Georg’s background,
and the timeline surrounding Windy and Leknaat in the Scarlet Moon Empire.

The Story - Unique, Not Repetitive

Š Konami

For Suikoden Star Leap, I want to see an unique story. Not one that is based loosely or largely on previous entries. We see remnants of the past, in the torching of the hero’s hometown, or with returning characters like Viki and Neaje (Jeane).

That the former hometown turns into your headquarters is a cool twist, and the development of that stems from a system much like Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes.

I’m curious whether the story can bring the same amount of emotional depth as predecessors did. Or even the same amount of work you can put into characters with abilities like in Suikoden III and V.

Besides the main storyline and the minigames, I would like side storylines for almost all the minor characters, so each character will have meaning.

No matter how small, every Star of Destiny should have at least one choice or meaningful line of dialogue in the game. Not just being there for the sake of being there.

The Hero – Growth Through The Journey

Like tradition in Suikoden, the hero of the game starts morally grounded and in some way, at the bottom. Financially wrecked, loss of their hometown or loved ones, or used as pawn in a political playing field.

The hero should never grow up too fast, or be a leader of an army in the blink of an eye. They should always earn leadership through physical, emotional and mental development.
It is completely fine if there are bad choices, and thus also possible bad endings. Branching out the story would allow significant options in choices for that matter.

One of these choices could always result into a development. Like a character no longer being recruitable, or sending someone out for an errand of war and hearing they passed away.

Those details lead into the development of a leader through hardships. That kind of leader is what I would like to see in Star Leap.

The Rune of Change - A True Rune That is Feared

The Rune of Change is a mysterious rune. It is believed in the lore that the Sindar Chief carried this rune on his forehead. It granted him eternal life, but doomed the Sindar Clan to a life of wandering.

There is little intelligence on the rune or the Sindar people. Researches like Killey, Lorelai and Zweig (Suikoden V), have never come close to understanding more about them.

Characters like Jeane and Eresh (Suikoden V), seem to know much more about specific things on the Sindar, but never release any information in the open.

Star Leap will therefore fill in the gap in the True Rune lore. My hope is that it’s a long journey, with many details uncovered. Whether the Rune of Change will have more purpose than time or space changes, remains the grand question.
Certain is that with this rune, all kinds of things are possible with legacy characters.

Previously, I’ve written about legacy characters that should return in Star Leap here:

Locations – Give Me New Lands!

Introducing new lands into the Suikoden universe, feels like a must-do situation for the developers towards the fans. In the published trailers, we’ve seen vintage locations like Gregminster and Lenankamp. The hometown of the hero turned into the headquarters is one of the few new locations witnessed in those trailers.

After the central story prior to the events of Suikoden I may wrap up, I would love to see new locations we never saw before. Locations like the Nagarea Theocracy, which knows a lot on the Sindar people.

Mostly preferred are the events surrounding the Kingdom of Harmonia.

Who doesn’t want to see how Hikusaak created Luc and Sasarai, the escape of Luc helped by Leknaat,
or how Harmonia aided the Highland Kingdom?

All those new locations could have a key part in the main storyline, or interesting and expanded side quests.

What are your hopes for Suikoden Star Leap? On which platform will you be playing?
