Have you struggled with the final boss in any Suikoden game? If so, was that really the game difficulty? Or was it because of the emotional depth as a contributing factor?
In this article, we are deep diving into the actual most difficult final bosses.
We made a ranking based on actual gameplay difficulty, not the impact of the story or the popularity of the game.
Factors taken in to create this ranking are: The punishment that you get from making mistakes. The way you have prepared your party for the final boss. The frequency of reported losses. And probably the most important of all, the first playthrough, a.k.a. playing blind.
Let’s get into the ins and outs of every single final boss in the Suikoden series.
Watch the full video ranking below, then continue with the detailed breakdown of each final boss.
#5: Golden Hydra in Suikoden I
The Golden Hydra was the very first final boss of the series.
Released in 1995, many gameplay mechanics weren’t that developed in the RPG/JRPG genre just yet. The multiple heads do provide variety in its moves, but there are few mechanics that require adaptation. It’s considered memorable, but generally not a major roadblock towards completing the game. Most players have deemed it to be a comfortable win if they reached this part with a balanced and well equipped party.
By acquiring all the 108 Stars of Destiny, this is deemed a reasonably easy final boss. If only Windy had known it would have been that easy. She might have prepped more before she met her demise.
The Golden Hydra is not the toughest cookie of the bunch. 4/10 difficulty.
#4 Giant Tree in Suikoden IV
One thing is for certain. When the final boss of the game is called Giant Tree, the developers were either out of creative thinking space, or they didn’t provide enough character length to be used in the corresponding menu.
Most first-time players will have a difficult battle with this one. Especially when the leaves turn white. Your party might be knocked out in an instant, as already discussed in the Top 10 Most Difficult Suikoden Boss Battles.
It has a respectable amount of HP and an endurance factor that’s high. For those players who love Suikoden IV like I do, another run against it will be quite easy. With upgraded weapons, a strong Rune of Punishment, and a great Falcon Rune attack by Kika, you’re good to send this tree to its final resting place.
Let’s stop the rune cannons! 5/10.
#3 True Wind Rune Incarnation in Suikoden III
All the elements are assembled. Though only one opponent stands in your way. Luc, with his True Wind Rune Incarnation.
This one makes you prioritise your targets and resource management is a key factor in this battle.
Despite breezing through the earlier boss battles, even veteran players of the series state they lose here.
That’s because this battle also features multiple elemental rune crystals alongside the main target.
You do not want to make any mistakes as you’re going to face a stretched out battle. Therefore, it’s important to keep on healing your characters. If you’re not, then you’re going to have to face the consequences.
Might this be the most underrated final boss of the Suikoden series?
Wind always gets the best of us, 7/10!
#2 Sun Rune Incarnation in Suikoden V
The Sun Rune is your final destination in Suikoden V.
The rune itself is guarded by some guardian sprites. They heal, attack and revive independently. This creates a battle of endurance with multiple threats hurling at you.
Mechanically, it’s one of the most complex finales in the series. The end phase of the PS2 era provided more advanced developmental options. Thus, Suikoden V (released in 2006) benefited from a great RPG era on this platform.
Suikoden V was also the first one not developed exclusively by Konami, in partnership with Hudson Soft.
The only reason the Sun Rune is not at #1, is because the parties can become extremely powerful. The general consensus is that Suikoden V is considered one of the more easier games.
Most of the formations you can acquire are mostly never even used. The skill developments of characters are important though, and provide essential upgrades for your battles.
Should the Sun Rune be #1 because of its advanced mechanics?
Altogether, the difficulty of the Sun Rune can be ranked a high 8/10.
#1 Beast Rune Incarnation in Suikoden II
The final boss might not have been the true boss. Looking back at the Top Ten Most Difficult Boss Battles, we all know Luca Blight remains unchallenged.
The Beast Rune displays itself as a Silver Wolf. That means there are five targets to look out for. Each with their own forms of attack and defence mechanisms. This is also one of the most frequently discussed battles in strategy conversations across the fan base.
The boss keeps sustained pressure on you as you try to keep your party alive. You need a good balance in melee attackers, highly capable rune users, and a tank to stay alive in the worst case scenario.
You have to prioritise your targets and make meaningful decisions every single turn you get.
For those who have used the exploits of the game and levelled up their characters to the maximum of 99, this is a walk in the park.
Those who went into this battle between levels 55 to 65, this will still be a challenge.
So is the Beast Rune genuinely the hardest final boss? Or simply the most discussed?
8.5/10 for this beast of a final boss!
Conclusion
Based on factual criteria, and fan experiences on strategy, preparation and difficulties beating the final bosses, we have reached the end of this ranking.
