The world of Suikoden is shaped my many heroes and antagonists, as much as the lore of the True Runes. Only a handful of Stars of Destiny illustrate the promise True Runes offer, as well as its’ agony. Wind Mage Luc evolves from the loyal apprentice of Leknaat, into a tragic villain.
In this article, we trace down Luc’s origin and his path to antagonism. We start with Suikoden I, and make our way through II to III. What made him decide to walk this path? Why does his fate divide the fans to this day?
The Conception of Luc: A Rune Engineered Clone
Â
Long before the appearance of Luc in the Suikoden franchise in-game, he was created through the dark art of Rune engineering. In the lore of Suikoden, one individual can only house a single True Rune. To try and get control of all the true Runes, priest-king Hikusaak of Harmonia started a series of experiments. Through these experiments, perfect bearers of the True Runes should be created.
Â
Sasarai was created to house the True Earth Rune, as Luc was created to house the True Wind Rune. His early years are spent under control of Hikusaak in the secret laboratories of Harmonia.
Â
The Rescue by Seer Leknaat
Leknaat is the blind seer and guardian of the true runes. In the first instalment she risks it all to steal Luc away from the Holy Kingdom of Harmonia. She believes that a rune-bearer deserves a full life, a life beyond being just a vessel for a True Rune.
Â
Luc appears as Leknaat’s bodyguard when Tir McDohl, Pahn, Cleo and Futch visit the Magic Island. They are going to get Leknaat’s Astral Conclusions. Coming across Luc, you can notice sarcasm and a hint of the power of the True Wind Rune. This young mage struggles with invisible constraint on the use of his rune.
Â
In Suikoden II, Luc returns as a playable Star of Destiny, still under Leknaat’s guidance. His demeanor already is more cold and weary of the world around him. He aids the New State Army in the war, but his dialogue tells a growing form of disillusion.
The Turning Point in Suikoden III
As Suikoden III begins, you encounter Luc firstly as leader of a group of Destroyers. The group wants to use brute force to separate True Runes from their hosts.
Even if it bring his own demise and chaos to the world, he is bound to destroy his own True Wind Rune in the process.
He is flanked by another devoted mage called Sarah, the chaotic Yuber, and his strategist; Albert Silverberg. Albert is drawn to Luc and his motives by the promise of radical destruction.
If the game is played well, you learn in Luc’s chapter that he abandons Leknaat’s mentorship. He embraces his destiny on his own destructive and nihilistic terms.
Â
Breaking The Cycle of Desperation
Luc’s path to antagonism isn’t just a form of intentional malice. It’s the product of desperation and a philosophy that fits his narrative. As an engineered True Rune vessel, Luc was never asked to be born with this purpose. His actions in Suikoden III is his way of wanting autonomy over his fate. If he cannot live with free will, then he will end the slavery of the True Runes.
Luc knows firsthand how the True Runes corrupt good ideals. He’s used Wind magic in the first two games. His final plan is a mirror to the actions of Jowy Blight’s sacrifice in Suikoden II. Both wanted an end to conflicts caused by runes. The only way they thought possible to do so was by self-destruction.
Â
Luc doesn’t aim to control the world or forge a peaceful land. His ultimate goal is his own demise. This makes him more a tragic antagonist than being a villain. In the last moments, he is confronted by Leknaat. He realizes that he was trying to achieve freedom through the wrong reasons. Not by growth, but through destruction and denying his adjusted purpose under Leknaat’s tutelage.
Luc’s Legacy: His Final Gift To The World
Luc passes his True Wind Rune on. Depending on who you chose as Flame Champion, this normally is inherited by Geddoe. The element of Wind thus remains in the world, but in the hands of someone who chooses life over death.
Fans are still debating on whether Luc’s self-destruction is the true legacy of his character.
What we do know in hindsight, is that Luc had one of the toughest lives in the whole Suikoden world.
